  23.    Second Merchant:  You know since Pentecost the sum is due,
  24.                      And since I have not much importuned you;
  25.                      Nor now I had not, but that I am bound
  26.                      To Persia, and want guilders for my voyage:
  27.                      Therefore make present satisfaction,
  28.                      Or I'll attach you by this officer.

  30.             ANGELO:  Even just the sum that I do owe to you
  31.                      Is growing to me by Antipholus,
  32.                      And in the instant that I met with you
  33.                      He had of me a chain:  at five o'clock                  10
  34.                      I shall receive the money for the same.
  35.                      Pleaseth you walk with me down to his house,
  36.                      I will discharge my bond and thank you too.

  44.         OF EPHESUS:  While I go to the goldsmith's house, go thou
  45.                      And buy a rope's end:  that will I bestow
  46.                      Among my wife and her confederates,
  47.                      For locking me out of my doors by day.
  48.                      But, soft!  I see the goldsmith.  Get thee gone;
  49.                      Buy thou a rope and bring it home to me.                20

  51.  DROMIO OF EPHESUS:  I buy a thousand pound a year:  I buy a rope.

  56.         OF EPHESUS:  A man is well holp up that trusts to you:
  57.                      I promised your presence and the chain;
  58.                      But neither chain nor goldsmith came to me.
  59.                      Belike you thought our love would last too long,
  60.                      If it were chain'd together, and therefore came not.
  61.  
  62.             ANGELO:  Saving your merry humour, here's the note
  63.                      How much your chain weighs to the utmost carat,
  64.                      The fineness of the gold and chargeful fashion.
  65.                      Which doth amount to three odd ducats more              30
  66.                      Than I stand debted to this gentleman:
  67.                      I pray you, see him presently discharged,
  68.                      For he is bound to sea and stays but for it.

  71.         OF EPHESUS:  I am not furnish'd with the present money;
  72.                      Besides, I have some business in the town.
  73.                      Good signior, take the stranger to my house
  74.                      And with you take the chain and bid my wife
  75.                      Disburse the sum on the receipt thereof:
  76.                      Perchance I will be there as soon as you.

  81.         OF EPHESUS:  No; bear it with you, lest I come not time enough.

  83.             ANGELO:  Well, sir, I will.  Have you the chain about you?

  85.         ANTIPHOLUS
  86.         OF EPHESUS:  An if I have not, sir, I hope you have;
  87.                      Or else you may return without your money.

  89.             ANGELO:  Nay, come, I pray you, sir, give me the chain:
  90.                      Both wind and tide stays for this gentleman,
  91.                      And I, to blame, have held him here too long.

  93.         ANTIPHOLUS
  94.         OF EPHESUS:  Good Lord!  you use this dalliance to excuse
  95.                      Your breach of promise to the Porpentine.
  96.                      I should have chid you for not bringing it,             50

  99.    Second Merchant:  The hour steals on; I pray you, sir, dispatch.

  101.             ANGELO:  You hear how he importunes me;--the chain!

  104.         OF EPHESUS:  Why, give it to my wife and fetch your money.

  106.             ANGELO:  Come, come, you know I gave it you even now.
  107.                      Either send the chain or send me by some token.

  109.         ANTIPHOLUS
  110.         OF EPHESUS:  Fie, now you run this humour out of breath,
  111.                      where's the chain?  I pray you, let me see it.

  113.    Second Merchant:  My business cannot brook this dalliance.
  114.                      Good sir, say whether you'll answer me or no:           60
  115.                      If not, I'll leave him to the officer.

  117.         ANTIPHOLUS
  118.         OF EPHESUS:  I answer you!  what should I answer you?

  120.             ANGELO:  The money that you owe me for the chain.

  123.         OF EPHESUS:  I owe you none till I receive the chain.

  125.             ANGELO:  You know I gave it you half an hour since.

  128.         OF EPHESUS:  You gave me none:  you wrong me much to say so.

  130.             ANGELO:  You wrong me more, sir, in denying it:
  131.                      Consider how it stands upon my credit.

  133.    Second Merchant:  Well, officer, arrest him at my suit.

  135.            Officer:  I do; and charge you in the duke's name to obey me.     70

  137.             ANGELO:  This touches me in reputation.
  138.                      Either consent to pay this sum for me
  139.                      Or I attach you by this officer.

  142.         OF EPHESUS:  Consent to pay thee that I never had!
  143.                      Arrest me, foolish fellow, if thou darest.

  145.             ANGELO:  Here is thy fee; arrest him, officer,
  146.                      I would not spare my brother in this case,
  147.                      If he should scorn me so apparently.

  149.            Officer:  I do arrest you, sir:  you hear the suit.

  151.         ANTIPHOLUS
  152.         OF EPHESUS:  I do obey thee till I give thee bail.                   80

  156.             ANGELO:  Sir, sir, I will have law in Ephesus,
  157.                      To your notorious shame; I doubt it not.

  165.                      The oil, the balsamum and aqua-vitae.

  171.         OF EPHESUS:  How now!  a madman!  Why, thou peevish sheep,

  176.         ANTIPHOLUS
  177.         OF EPHESUS:  Thou drunken slave, I sent thee for a rope;
  178.                      And told thee to what purpose and what end.

  180. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE:  You sent me for a rope's end as soon:
  181.                      You sent me to the bay, sir, for a bark.

  183.         ANTIPHOLUS
  184.         OF EPHESUS:  I will debate this matter at more leisure              100
